The AJCC Cancer Staging Atlas provides over 400 illustrations depicting anatomic extent for tumor (T), regional lymph nodes (N), and metastasis (M) for multiple sites including head and neck, digestive system, thorax, musculoskeletal, soft tissue, breast, genitourinary, and gynecologic tumor sites. This is the first edition of the atlas. The AJCC Cancer Staging Atlas fulfills the mission of the American Joint Committee on Cancer of education on cancer staging with an outstanding, highly visual representation of the companion to the AJCC Staging Manual (Sixth edition). This book fills a void for a clear, portable and easy to use reference for cancer staging. The authors state this atlas provides a refresher for the experienced clinician and a reference for the trainee. The atlas provides this and should be recommended for any health care professional or student who care for cancer patients or study the disease. The 432 illustrations by Alice Y. Chen provide detailed representations allowing the reader to instantly visualize the extent of malignant disease and its corresponding stage. The information is concise and could be used effectively from a coat pocket on the wards or at one’s desk. The illustrations are unparalleled in their depiction of cancer staging. The images limit ambiguity to allow for better descriptions of extent of disease and a better mechanism for categorizing similar groups of cancer patients. This visual representation of cancer staging is an important contribution and is the best of its kind

This collection of chapters composed by over 40 contributing authors describes the physiology of energy homeostasis and body weight control, the pathophysiology of obesity, and the management of the obese patient in clinical practice. The book satisfies the need for both a comprehensive resource for researchers and a concise and pragmatic guideline for physicians. The intent was to assemble in a single book an up-to-date review of obesity-related topics, from recent scientific advances in obesity research to current treatment issues and strategies. The book is unique since the authors are not only experts in the field, but also clinicians who are able to translate the current knowledge into clinical practice. Therefore, it is a comprehensive reference for both researchers interested in the physiology of body weight control and pathophysiology of obesity and the breakthrough research (described in Part 1) and for practicing clinicians who have taken on the difficult task of the clinical management of the obese patient (discussed in Part 2). These are important objectives in light of the expanding obesity epidemic and the need for more researchers and physicians involved in its understanding and management. The authors state that the intended audience includes all healthcare providers managing patients with weight problems. I would add that it is also suitable for students and researchers looking for a comprehensive review of the physiology of energy homeostasis and appetite control and the pathophysiology of obesity. Part 1 thoroughly covers the new discoveries in the mechanisms that control food intake, energy expenditure, and peripheral nutrient metabolism. It reviews among others the neuroregulation of appetite, the role of gut peptides as peripheral signals to the brain, and the role of adipokines, peripheral nutrients, insulin, and “ectopic fat” in obesity-related metabolic deregulation. Part 2 summarizes a well rounded variety of topics related to the management of obesity, including the socioeconomic aspects of obesity, the office assessment of the obese patient and the patient with polycystic ovary syndrome, the main dietary approaches, and the role of physical activity in weight management. Because each chapter is thoroughly written and referenced, this book also serves as an excellent starting point for students, researchers, and practitioners who need a guide to the primary published literature. Also, the practical chapter dedicated to the assessment of the obese patient is a useful resource for practitioners who have taken a step further in their everyday practice and are now engaged in a more active and systematic role in evaluating and treating the patient with a weight problem. This is unique among reviews on obesity management in that it covers a number of different areas, and does so in a thorough and streamlined way. It is easy to navigate and to retrieve information. Because each chapter functions independently, I would recommend this book to a large audience that includes researchers, trainees in nutrition, students, and practitioners. Given that the obesity epidemic represents one of the most significant threats to the health of our nation, this broad and diverse review is merited and should stimulate and engage researchers and clinicians who have undertaken the challenge of understanding and managing obesity. I’m not aware of any other book which covers in such a comprehensive manner the current knowledge of obesity and the patient with a weight problem.

In this book, the authors undertake a comprehensive and advanced analysis of current and approaching neuro-interventions, as well as an extensive discussion of the moral and legal questions about these interventions. The aim is to individually review state-of-the-art neurological interventions, to indicate future developments in neuroscience, and to address the ethical and legal issues common to the field. Because of the intimate link between brain, mind, and personhood, neurological interventions are oftentimes met by significant controversy. This book aims to offer a thorough, yet balanced, account of these interventions and their implications for society, policy, and personhood. The book is directed at anyone with a background in neuroscience who is also interested in its ethical dimensions. While the medical descriptions in Part I are comprehensive, and oftentimes require an advanced understanding of neuroscience, the philosophical discussion in Part II is more accessible, and rewarding, for those without an extensive science background. In Part I the authors provide a detailed review of the current and up-and-coming techniques for neurological intervention, including psychopharmacology, neurotransplantation, gene transfer, neural prostheses, and electrical brain stimulation. Part II addresses the societal, ethical, and legal dimensions of these interventions, including discussions of personhood and identity, the treatment-prevention-enhancement distinction, and the proper limits of medicine. The final chapter offers an excellent recapitulation of central philosophical concepts and normative considerations and contributes several valuable recommendations for future research, treatment, and monitoring of neuro-interventions. This book is remarkably sophisticated both in terms of its scientific exposition and philosophical analysis, a combination that is rare. In this way, it is attractive both as a thorough scientific reference for neuro-interventions (for those without a neuroscience background), and as a thoughtful and well grounded exploration of the ethical issues that encumber the field. The authors properly situate their discussion within a well developed philosophical framework, and recognize how the complex and dynamic nature of the issues leave certain questions unanswered.

Like all of the volumes in Methods in Molecular Biology series, this guide provides clear information on modern laboratory techniques that are appropriate for the subject at hand — immunological tolerance. In addition there are reviews of the literature on tolerance. According to the editor, the book will provide information on the techniques currently used to isolate, culture, and characterize the cell types that maintain self-tolerance and will also describe the experimental models used to study their function. As we learn more about tolerance, it is of increasing importance to establish methodologies that will allow us to find ways to prevent the immune system from responding to self-antigens as well as to foreign antigens involved in transplant rejection. The techniques described in this guide should push this area of research forward. The audience for this book includes both basic science and clinical researchers who are studying problems relating to immunological tolerance. Experts in the field write the various chapters. The first of the book’s four main parts is an introduction to immunologic tolerance with a focus on the generation and culture of thymic epithelial cells, regulatory T cells, and dendritic cells. The second section focuses on the study of immunological tolerance in vitro while the third details protocols for the study of tolerance in vivo. The final section describes methods for breaking tolerance. As always in this series, the methods are very detailed. While it is possible that the protocols in this book can be found in other books, the probability of finding all of them in one place in such detail is not likely. Thus, for anyone interested in studying tolerance, this is a potentially useful source of information. The overview chapters that begin each section with their detailed references are a nice touch.
