“We will unravel the mystery of the disappearing songbirds by taking a journey with them.” Ornithologist Stutchbury so begins her exploration of the causes for the decline of migratory songbirds in the tropics, the wintering area for many of North America’s birds. Migrants fit themselves into the local fauna, joining flocks or defending feeding territories until time to wing north for breeding. As the reader follows the birds, Stutchbury introduces the hazards they must face: fragmentation of habitat, which can range from simple road cuts to complete deforestation; replacement of natural vegetation with agricultural fields, typically “deserts” for birds; the ongoing problems with pesticides; light pollution, glass windows, communication towers, wind turbines, and other obstacles; and, finally, predators and introduced parasites, which have their greatest effect on the breeding grounds. She discusses the rapid decline of many songbird species and strategies for saving them. “Anderson was a self-taught naturalist. He was born and raised in Appalachian Kentucky, but marriage and career sent him to Ohio, where he ended up on his wife’s family farm. Rebuilding the worn-out farm into a nature preserve, and working toward the establishment of Ohio’s only national forest, Anderson also found his muse and wrote poems and stories reflecting on nature and a sense of place. Living organisms are subject to fluctuating environmental conditions. Whereas most animals are able to move away from unfavourable conditions, plants are sessile and so must cope with whatever comes their way. Of all the environmental cues that challenge the developing plant, light can probably be considered to be the most important. In addition to its key role in plant metabolism, and hence almost all life on Earth, where it drives the process of photosynthesis, light energy also acts to regulate plant growth and development. Light quantity, quality, direction and diurnal and seasonal duration regulate processes from germination, through seedling establishment to the architecture of the mature plant and the transition to reproductive development. These developmental responses of plants to light constitute photomorphogenesis.This volume is designed to provide the reader with state-of-the-art accounts of our current knowledge of the major classes of higher plant regulatory photoreceptors and the signal transduction networks that comprise plant developmental photobiology. Consideration is also given to the ways in which knowledge of plant photoreceptors and their signalling networks can be exploited, for instance to improve the quality and productivity of commercially-grown plants. A new style of textbook, aimed principally at the European (and British in particular) student. It is needed because almost all current organic chemistry texts are written to a fixed American pattern. This text is different from these in a number of important ways: The approach is based on explanation rather than fact. The functional group approach (alkane, alkene, alkyne) has served American State College readers well but increasingly students and instructors are attracted more to an approach based on mechanism and reaction type. This approach aims at understanding rather than factual knowledge and, though slower at the start, eventually gives the student power to understand compounds and reactions never previously encountered. This is a big advantage in a science already too large for individuals to learn and which is annually expanding at an ever greater rate. The basics of the subject are explained carefully and thoroughly.

They discuss the broadest influences on climate, such as incoming solar radiation and changes in the earth’s orbit and axial tilt. Another fundamental of climate, the position of continents, which, along with prevailing winds, establishes the pattern of ocean currents, receives its synopsis, as does the centrality of ocean currents to the global distribution of heat–when they change, so does climate. The authors also address the most spectacular example of climate change, the El Nino-Southern Oscillation, while noting comparable rhythms named the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation.
