This book begins with a review of basic genetic principles and progresses to a discussion of genetic variations and it impact on health and disease. The major types of genetic disorders, gene action, and patterns of inheritance are included. The purpose is to provide nurses with an understanding of genetics and offer insight into integration of this information into nursing practice. Throughout the book, the author emphasizes the application of genetics to nursing practice and includes the role of the nurse in genetics counseling. This edition offers new research findings and advances in the treatment of genetic disorders, including gene directed therapies. This practical, well organized book is essential for the nursing professional and is best suited for a graduate or baccalaureate level course. Basic genetic information is covered at a level appropriate for nursing students. The book is text heavy, with very little art to illustrate main points. A basic glossary of terms at the end will be of great benefit to readers not familiar with the terminology. The book is divided into five sections with a total of 27 chapters, which can be read sequentially or one at a time. Diagrams and figures are helpful and relevant to the material. A comprehensive bibliography and appendixes provide up-to-date information on useful web sites, organizations, and support groups. However, the number of photographs is minimal and the quality is poor. The black-and-white photographs are dark and difficult to see. This compendium of basic genetic information is oriented to the nursing staff and the nursing student. Multiple similar books exist in the literature written for different audiences. This one places in perspective the future role of nursing in medical genetics, as the evolution of genetics medical practice continues. Luis F. This book reflects the changing arena in which advanced practice nurses function. The first edition was written about 10 years ago. In this third edition, advanced practice roles are integrated as dynamic components of advanced practice nursing. The purpose is to present competencies identified by organizations representing advanced nursing practice including the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM). The authors do an excellent job of meeting the challenging objectives of this book. It is written for graduate students enrolled in advanced nursing programs. The authors are extremely knowledgeable and provide valuable information to students as they prepare to begin their professional careers as advanced practice nurses. The book provides a brief historical overview of each of the advanced practice roles: nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse midwives, and certified registered nurse anesthetists. It is organized into three units covering foundations of advanced practice nursing, implementation of the APN role, and transitions to the advanced practice role. The authors use tables and illustrations to enhance the delivery of information. The references are current and extensive. The purpose is to help advanced practice nursing students to transition into professional practice with ease. The chapters are pertinent and relevant to today’s nursing practice dealing with ethics, politics, legislation, regulatory bodies, insurance companies, and research.
