摘要:
Global concern about the potential for pandemic avian influenza is rooted in the pathogenicity of avian influenza virus strains in humans and the lack of immunity to these highly mutable viruses in the general population. Avian influenza A (H5N1) re-emerged in 2003 with greater virulence and a wider host range than that seen following its 1997 debut. Although transmission of avian influenza A (H5N1) from animals to humans remains inefficient at this time, mutation or genetic reassortment with human influenza virus strains could trigger an influenza pandemic facilitated by the mobility of modern society and the lack of an effective vaccine. Dr. Alan Sanders provides timely, practical advice on how to improve clinical awareness and implement strategies for diagnosing, treating, and preventing avian influenza

Reviews
“Gyorgy Buzsaki’s Rhythms of the Brain is an excellent compendium on the rapidly expanding research into the mechanisms and functions of neuronal synchronization. Buzsaski presents such synchronization as a binding glue that integrates many levels of neuroscientific investigation with one another and with neighboring disciplines…Buzsaki manages to elegantly integrate insights from physics, engineering, and cognitive psychology with contributions from cellular, systems, cognitive, and theoretical neuroscience.”~ Science

摘要:
Approximately 30 million children in the United States participate in organized sports programs, and more than 30% will sustain a sports injury that is severe enough to warrant treatment by a physician or nurse. To effectively manage the care of children with sports injuries requires an appreciation of the physical and physiologic differences between children and adults that may cause children to be more vulnerable to injury. It also requires the ability to recognize the extent of the injury, when referral is indicated, and how quickly the young athlete can return to play. Such determinations are particularly important in a child who has suffered a head injury. Dr. Adirim reviews the sports that are most often associated with injuries, the types of injuries that are commonly sustained, and the steps that should be taken in evaluating an injured child athlete and making treatment recommendations. Injury prevention and identification of children at higher risk of injury are emphasized

摘要:
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental disorders in the United States, affecting as many as 19 million people annually. Diagnosis and treatment of anxiety disorders can be challenging, as an anxiety disorder frequently coexists with another anxiety disorder or with a mood disorder–most notably, depression. An anxiety disorder can cause significant impairment in social and occupational functioning; the presence of comorbidity can lead to even greater impairment. In this video, Dr. Alan Siegel discusses the anxiety disorders that can present in primary careincluding generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobiasand offers practical advice for diagnosis and treatment

Reviews
” Tim Traver has created a wonderfully unique piece of genre blending in his elegant rumination on Sippewissett, the Cape Cod salt marsh he has known since childhood. By including both a rich history of the nearby Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (along with fascinating profiles of the many scientists associated with it over the years) and stories about his family’s long relationship with the marsh, he provides the reader with a work that is equal parts natural history and memoir. As he ponders the accomplishments and impact of naturalist luminaries Louis Agassiz, Spencer Baird, and Rachel Carson, he places their historic research in the context of the marsh’s present condition. This transition is made easy by his family’s deep connection to the region, which he shares in passages echoing George Howe Colt’s National Book Award finalist, The Big House (2003). Traver has the same deep attachment to the land as Colt, but his scientific background and attention to the region’s marine biology raises the book to a higher level. Sippewissett is a rare book, as it both informs and entrances. A delight from beginning to end.” ~ From Booklist

Reviews
“Fictional fascination with cloning has rarely focused on scientific fact but usually on issues of identity and how the sanctity of life will be challenged when ‘ditto machines’ of one kind or another create ‘cookie cutter humans.’ This obsession has led to endless confusion about what is possible and what is not.” So writes Wilmut, leader of the team that 10 years ago cloned Dolly, the first animal created from an adult cell. He and Highfield, science editor of the Daily Telegraph in England, set out to separate fact from fiction. They succeed beautifully and go on to provide a forceful moral argument for cloning and its power to fight, and even eradicate, some of the most terrible diseases in existence. At the same time, this pioneer of cloning remains staunch in his opposition to using the procedure for human reproduction.
The book, despite its weighty concerns, avoids a moralizing tone and is exceedingly pleasant to read. To give a taste of the style: in explaining the arthritis that developed in Dolly’s knee–unrelated, so far as they can tell, to cloning–the authors conclude that perhaps the condition “was inevitable for a corpulent sheep who had been indulged all her life and liked to stand up and beg on her rear legs.”
