This edited book provides research-based information about the impact on families of caring for a member with chronic mental illness. Eight chapters address specific disorders and report on outcomes of interventions focused on family support and psycho-education. Four other chapters address research on broader topics such as the role of family organizations in mental health care. The editors hope to sensitize readers to issues for families involved in caring for a relative with chronic mental illness. Past research has often focused on the impact of family members on the patient. This book hopes to further the work underway in many countries to provide families with skills both for their own self-care and for better management of the patient. The book is addressed to psychiatrist and other mental health workers who deal with persons with chronic mental illness. It is well organized and suited to the busy professional. The book frames its content in the context of a developing sensitivity to the role of the family of the person with mental illness. Whereas past theory often blamed the family for the ill person’s symptoms, a better understanding of the psychobiology of various disorders now points to the high personal cost to family members who live with or support their relative. There is evidence that some interventions prevent, or at least mitigate, the development of health problems in these family members and also contribute to decreased hospitalization for the patient. Both are important topics with financial implications. Research used in this book is quite current and well chosen. The richness of this book lies in its use of studies from many countries, including two family-centered cultures, India and China. Somatoform disorders hold a special place in the history of psychiatry, neurology, and medicine but they remain controversial; perplexing conceptually; a diagnosis essentially based on dualism; a diagnosis that often rests upon the clinician making a correct inference of the patient’s intentions; lack validity studies except for, possibly, somatization disorder; extremely frustrating to the clinician and the patient’s family; a burden on the healthcare system, and are difficult to treat. This book addresses these vexing issues head-on. The editors and authors critically review and bring the reader up-to-date in the current understanding of this important group of illnesses. Written and edited by a group of internationally recognized authorities in this area, the book is an outstanding contribution to the psychiatric literature. The purpose of the book, according to the editors, is to provide a comprehensive overview of all somatoform disorders in order to help clinicians in the proper diagnosis, management, and consultation of patients with these problems. The intended audience includes “…psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health workers, and mental health policy makers.” Primary care physicians and neurologists would also benefit from reading this book. The topics covered in the six chapters include syndromes and illnesses beyond the DSM boundaries of somatoform disorders. Areas included are somatization and conversion disorders, pain disorder, hypochondriasis, body dysmorphic disorder, chronic fatigue and neurasthenia, and factitious physical disorders. Each topic is reviewed in depth and with an international perspective. The chapters are written in a scholarly fashion and end with relevant citations of the scientific literature. The index is helpful. This is an informative and comprehensive new book on a group of common but difficult disorders. The book should be read by all clinicians. I highly recommend it. This is a thorough description of instrumentation, and the theory driving the instrumentation, necessary to complete an accurate and valid biomechanical analysis. The authors propose to meet several worthy objectives. The primary purpose is to serve as an aid to kinesiologists, engineers, and other laboratory researchers while conducting human movement research. The book outlines many of the mathematical and technical tools used to observe human motion, specifically covering the measurement of kinematics and kinetics. Generally, the book covers electromyography, muscle modeling, computer simulation, and signal processing. The authors satisfactorily meet each of the objectives. The intended audience is a mixture of kinesiology and biomedical engineering students and various laboratory scientists. The authors state up front that readers should have previously taken an introductory biomechanics course. Readers should also be familiar with basic algebraic processes and vector composition, although the authors are forgiving to those who do not approach the text with a background in these areas; a brief review is provided in many of the areas. Finally, this combination of authors provides a very strong and credible source of elucidation on research methods in biomechanics. This book discusses the observation, in two and three dimensions, of human kinematics and kinetics. It also explains the theory behind and instrumentation used in the study of electromyography, muscle modeling, computer simulation, and signal processing. The content of is more extensive and thorough than any other biomechanics book I have been exposed to. Because the authors expect readers to begin with a background in biomechanics, they are able to delve deeper into many of the issues essential to research. This makes the book especially helpful to graduate students in various related fields. The book also uses excerpts from current and past scientific literature to explain especially important concepts. This is an excellent reference for any advanced study of biomechanics. As a PhD student preparing to take my qualifying exams, I have used this book to refresh my memory on a wide variety of biomechanical concepts. This second edition extends and updates the 1999 edition but continues the focus of the earlier one on providing a discussion of background information on the immune response, a review of important immunodiagnostic tools, a discussion of major pharmacological agents used to modify the immune response, and an introduction to immunotoxicology all in a single source. The goal is to provide a standalone text on immunological principles, immunopharmacology, and immunotoxicology for physicians, researchers, and students with a rudimentary knowledge of immunology. The editors have done an admirable job of selecting superb contributors who have written a very readable and worthwhile text. This book is of great value for students, educators, researchers or practitioners with an interest in immunology, immunopharmacology, or immunotoxicology. It is well done. Its four major sections cover mechanisms of immunity, immunodiagnostics, immunotherapeutics, and immunotoxicology. It also contains an excellent list of abbreviations, a must in any book related to immunology, and an appendix with important information on selected examples of vaccines registered in the U.S., marketed anti-allergic products, licensed cytokines, examples of marked drugs, commercially available plant and dietary immunomodulators, class I non-selective COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitors, chemical structures of NSAIDs, high yield information on NSAIDs, overview of DMARDs used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, and guidance on immunotoxicity. However, the numbering of the appendixes is confusing. The book also contains an excellent glossary. The revolution of genomic and proteomic research has had a marked impact on the understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of immunological disorders. This book is intended to provide us with a micro and macroscopic view of the pathology we see every day so we can better understand their radiographic appearances. The purpose is to provide radiologists with pathologic correlation to radiographic findings. It’s like AFIP in book form. These are worthy objectives since understanding the gross and microscopic pathology allows us to be better at our field. However, they are partially met; the book is strong in the realm of neoplasms, but lacking elsewhere. Although the author does not specify for whom the book is intended, it appears to be written for practitioners. It is a useful resource for upper level residents as well. The book provides radiologic-pathologic correlations primarily for masses and neoplasms seen throughout the body. The photographs of gross specimens are truly helpful in understanding why certain masses have specific imaging characteristics. Additionally, the book is comprehensive and provides information on even the most rare neoplasms. The sections on interstitial lung disease, small airway disease, MSK infections, and arthritis are excellent but are the only sections concentrating on non-neoplastic pathology. This is an excellent reference for those who want a better understanding of why various masses provide us with certain radiologic appearances.
